タイトル:Re-examining Edgeworth’s “Field of Competition”: Towards Reconstructing the Vision of Competitive Markets
概要:This paper offers a unified reinterpretation of F. Y. Edgeworth’s Mathematical Psychics (1881) and his later paper republished as Edgeworth (1925 [1897]). It argues that Edgeworth understood competition not as convergence toward an equilibrium point, but as an ongoing process of movement within a “field of competition” shaped by continual re-contracting. While modern economics typically treats competition as a problem of equilibrium, Edgeworth’s analyses of contract exchange and price competition suggest a different perspective. The contract curve in Mathematical Psychics is interpreted not as a set of final agreements but as a pathway along which exchange continues through renegotiation. Likewise, the Edgeworth cycle is understood not as a special equilibrium outcome but as persistent movement generated in the absence of equilibrium. This interpretation is linked to developments in nineteenth-century physics, particularly field theory and the calculus of variations. Just as physics increasingly focused on fields that determine the direction of motion at every point in space, Edgeworth analysed competition in terms of directions of change rather than equilibrium positions. Competition therefore appears as a dynamic field of movement rather than a collection of equilibrium states. The paper argues that Edgeworth’s contract theory and cycle theory form a unified framework, fundamentally different from both equilibrium theory and modern game-theoretic models such as Maskin and Tirole (1988). By re-examining Edgeworth’s competitive field, the paper highlights an alternative approach to understanding persistent fluctuations, taxation paradoxes, and the dynamics of modern competitive and platform markets.
